Product Design

What Is Design? How Does the Product Design Process Work? What Should You Watch Out For?

Product design stands at the very beginning of every new project.

What Is Design, Really?

You might think design is simply about how an object looks and whether it is visually appealing.

But design is much more than that:

  • Does the result meet the requirements?
  • Does it fulfill its purpose effectively?
  • Is it intuitive and comfortable to use?
  • Does it respect technical and technological principles?

There Is No Single Definition of Product Design

Ask several product designers what product design means, and you will likely receive slightly different answers.

In general, product design can be described as a creative process that begins with identifying a market need or a promising opportunity.

From there, the goal is to find the best possible solution — one that meets technical requirements while remaining attractive and competitive. During the design phase, many factors must be considered, including the price-to-performance ratio, material selection, ergonomics, manufacturability, and more.

Who Determines a Product’s Success?

The success of a new product primarily depends on the collaboration between the product designer and the engineer (or constructor). The distinction between their roles is a topic worthy of its own article, but both are essential in transforming an idea into a viable, market-ready product.

How Does the Product Design Process Work?

Good design never happens by simply sitting down and sketching something at a desk.

At the beginning of every product design project, a thorough analysis takes place. This includes understanding the problem, the needs of future users, and aesthetic expectations. It is crucial to define where, by whom, and how the product will be used.

Only then can the first concepts be created. Through gradual iterations and refinements, the design evolves step by step into its final form.

Avoid the Critical Mistake That Can Destroy an Entire Project

You have a finished product design and want to move directly into production?

Be careful. Many promising projects have failed at this exact point.

Thorough testing must be an integral part of product design.

Start by producing a 3D printed model and carefully test its ergonomics and functionality. Once everything is refined, create a physical mock-up. Present it to potential end users and gather valuable feedback from the people who will actually use the product.

After incorporating this feedback, develop a functional prototype and conduct final testing.

Everything works as expected? Excellent — now you are ready for production.
